Cycling in Toronto

One of the biggest problems with riding in the city, is that it’s a motorist’s world.  We have very few bike lanes, and a very comprehensive list of bike laws and associated fines:

There are plenty of blogs out there that speak of how cycling is a fashion statement and advocate cycling as a natural mode of transportation that comes as natural as walking etc.  (It’s interesting to see their perspective of us).  Perhaps it’s just a euro centric view of city planning and how to move people within those cities, but in Toronto (and I would imagine North America in general) it’s quite difficult for bikes to operate in any sustainable way.

But, as a Toronto cyclist, I have to ensure my safety while riding in the city to and from work by ensuring that I’m driving both defensively, and offensively as many motorists will cut you off instead of wasting a few minutes on their commute by giving a cyclist a bit of space.

Maybe I’m just feeling envy of a bike friendly city — but I think that I would feel quite the culture shock if I were to get on my bike and ride through Copenhagen or Amsterdam tomorrow :)

P.S. Even the bike cops don’t wear helmets!

Will your bike to stop

Just read this funny article that addresses some of the silliness regarding brakeless riding.

I rode brakeless for a month or so, but knew that it was time to end it when I was riding one day, and some pedestrians walked off of the side walk in front of me, and I almost yelled back at them:

Watch it! I’m riding without any brakes!!

Man, what an asshole thing to say!

TTC Fare Hikes

$3? Really? I have such a hard time imagining how a fare hike to three dollars can be warrented. I’ve always been a strong supporter of public transit, and still am, but I don’t believe that I’m be as strong of a supporter of the TTC in particular.

Hang the cyclists

Sometimes, this is how I perceive the Toronto drivers feel about cyclists:

Incorporate gravatars into your application

It’s super easy:

#/usr/bin/perl
use strict;
use Digest::MD5 qw( md5_hex );

my $email = shift || die("Please provide email address\n");
my $hash = md5_hex lc($email);

print "http://gravatar.com/avatar/${hash}.jpg\n";

I use them at work for showing tooltip displays upon email receipt etc. They’re fun and handy to add to any little application.
